Heritage Garden Internship
The UIC Heritage Garden Internship is a hands-on learning project where students work with faculty, staff, and community members to connect horticulture with environmental sustainability, cultural diversity, and social justice. There are currently 8 satellite gardens on the east side of campus.
During the Heritage Garden BCC sessions, interns explore a wide range of topics affecting black communities including: reclaiming garden spaces, black farmers and the importance of land, representation of black people along the Appalachian, and other topics. Interns acquire a deeper understanding of how we can use our knowledge of gardening and environmentally friendly practices to make our communities a better place through storytelling, presentations and discussions.
