Fehinty African Theatre Ensemble
In 2004, a group of African students at Truman College decided to put on a play; The Gods are Not to Blame, by Ola Rotimi. It was the first time many in the cast and the audience of African immigrants would experience African theatre in Chicago. It lit a spark and other plays followed. Fehinty African Theatre Ensemble (FATE) believes that performance illuminates our many trajectories and our common humanity. Their mission is to stage creative works from Africa and its Diaspora through a process that actively engages African communities, facilitates the development of emerging artists and fosters cross-cultural dialogue and creative exchanges. Fehinty African Theatre Ensemble was one of the keynote performers in the African American Cultural Center's PastForward/ In Black spring 2017 flagship program, Possessing Remedies: Restorative Performance Practices in Black and Brown Communities. The ensemble performed their Diaspora Monologues. Fehinty African Theatre Enseble's Diaspora Monologues are a performance series featuring the works of community members exploring the constitution, meaning, scope, and experiences of Diaspora. Diaspora Monologues are the comical to compelling expressions of our journeys in encountering one another.
