Toni Morrison’s virtuosic play with the English language changed the landscape of American literature and deepened its capacity for truth-telling. In a 50-year writing career that produced 11 novels, 5 children’s books, nonfiction works and essay collections, two plays, and even an opera libretto, Morrison challenged what we thought language could do…and for whom. Morrison’s work examined the complex fusion of pain, brokenness, longing and liberation defining black lives in America, and offered an uncompromising analysis of the brutal operations of race in American letters and life.
Morrison is the winner of numerous honors including the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, the Nobel Prize for Literature, and the Presidential Medal of Freedom, she has left an unparalleled legacy of literary bravery. In her own words:
