“Cintio Vitier” Cuban Youth Arts Project: A Visual Arts Exhibition

The “Cintio Vitier” Cuban Youth Arts Project makes its United States debut with a wide range of abstract, acrylic, watercolor, portrait, landscape and mixed media works. Foregrounding the extraordinary talents and motivations of young visual artists from Havana, Cuba’s “Cintio Vitier” community socio-cultural project founded by visual artist Pedro Miguel González Pulido, the exhibit also calls attention to artistic practices as mobilizing forces that convene youth and elders from diverse geographic and ethnic communities.

Established in 2009 in the Consejo Popular Colon, Nuevo Vedado, and named after famed Cuban poet, essayist, and novelist Cintio Vitier (1921 – 2009), the Project initially gathered children and young adults from the diverse communities of the Consejos 53, 68, 18, around the uses of plastic arts as a way to heighten their ethical and aesthetic values. Soon after it was founded, the Project began to offer painting, music, dance, photography, cinema, literature and dramatic writing workshops. The collaborative nature of the Project and its fostering of various artistic formats and techniques have helped to build a sense of community among the young Cuban artists. In turn, they have been able to collectively imagine and take action toward improving the cultural life of their neighborhoods and country.
