Tri-Campus: Roots to Roux to Rhythm: Black Storytelling through Cuisine and Music at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

February 9, 2026

1:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Location

University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign

Join the Black and Diversity Centers from UIUC, UIC, and UIS for an evening of celebration and connection. Roots to Roux to Rhythm honors centuries of stories across the African diaspora through food, music, culture, and identity.

Together, we will:
- explore how cuisine serves as a bridge between traditions, politics, and social justice, inspired by Dr. Bobby J. Smith II’s book Food Power Politics.
- enjoy a soulful performance by alumna Yanna Cello, blending classical artistry with contemporary trap influences
-Engage in meaningful conversations about coalition building and community resilience.

This event is an opportunity to reflect, connect, and celebrate the power of storytelling as a source of remembrance and joy.
